Certified MoldDogs™

About Our Dogs

Man's best friend is the latest weapon in the war on mold. Using traditional detection methods alone can be costly and drag on for weeks. We supplement these with our Certified MoldDogs™. Certified MoldDogs™ detect and pinpoint exact areas of mold, which leads to lower remediation costs for homeowners and insurers. Certified MoldDogs™ are trained to discriminate scents from various types of microbial colonies in a variety of structures, including places where even people cannot reach. Scent discrimination enables the Certified MoldDogs™ to differentiate between normal product materials found in the home and mold. If the dog finds mold, the dog will alert the handler to the location.

Certified MoldDogs™ receive more than 1000 hours of training and are proficient in their duties before the handler arrives at the Academy. Each Certified MoldDogs™ and handler is then paired and trained together throughout the course, after which they continuously train to ensure accuracy.

Quarterly testing and annual re-certification are required. At the end of each re-certification course, the Certified Master Trainer verifies that each canine team is still capable of detecting mold and then issues the re-certification.

"A MOLDDOG™ can get to places faster than people, and can detect mold in places that people can't reach", says Alan Borner, head of Healthy Indoor Environment. "Human inspectors might be in a building for four hours, he adds, before deciding to take a sledgehammer to the walls."

A Certified MoldDogs™ represents the newest tool for consumers in America to detect and more importantly, pinpoint mold in structures, thus lowering remediation costs.

This detection method is great for clients interested in:

  • Instantaneous detection of problem areas
  • Pinpointing problem areas and thus reducing remediation costs
  • Inspecting areas where extensive square footage exists

Training

When the handler arrives at the Florida Canine Academy, he or she is given the same training and held to the same standards as handlers of drug and bomb dogs. This training includes canine handling, search patterns, working in different types of buildings and structures, and scent discrimination training. Handlers are required to maintain their certification. They are trained to perform canine first aid, canine CPR, and sampling techniques.

The Certified MoldDogs™ and handler are then paired and trained together extensively. At the end of the course, the Certified Master Trainer verifies that each canine team is capable of discriminating mold scents and issues a certification. After the course, the training continues as daily training techniques are practiced. In addition, quarterly testing and annual re-certification are required.
